POLCOMS is the Proudman Oceanographic Laboratory Coastal Ocean Modelling System. It comprises a baroclinic three-dimensional model with the ability to run in regions which include both the deep ocean and the continental shelf, together with linked sediment and ecosystem models. It can take various forms of forcing boundary input. It can run on a wide range of computers, from laptops to massively parallel machines, and on a wide range of scales, from the regional to the coastal.
This documentation will be constantly evolving, as will the model system. The first release will concentrate on the physical model. It is expected that future versions of the documentation will include more on the linked models, and will benefit from feedback from users.
The first section is a technical description of the model, including a bibliography including published work based on POLCOMS. There follows a brief users' guide on setting up the model for a specific problem. Then there is a subroutine-level description of the model: it is intended to be detailed enough for developers to be able to modify the code and produce new subroutines for their own use or to feed back into the POLCOMS system.
A separate demonstration of some of the abilities of POLCOMS is available
