During the last decade, the Mediterranean Sea oceanographic community carried out a series of activities aiming at developing a Mediterranean Forecasting System, from basin to coastal scale. The scientific and technological advancements were incorporated in the Mediterranean Operational Oceanography Network (MOON) forecasting system, where a large number of regional systems are integrated in a unique forecasting network.
The forecasting network is continuously consolidated, upgraded and expanding, in the framework of the pan-european ocean forecast capacity building. Nesting and assimilation techniques have been implemented and validated, in order to improve the initialization and boundary conditions of the downscaling procedures. Validation activities are carried out, showing a good performance and revealing needs for further improvement of the system.
