(1) Oceanography Division, Naval Research Laboratory, Stennis Space Center, Mississippi, USA Main authors appear in bold Two data-assimilative, real-time global ocean models are currently being run on the High Performance Computing (HPC) systems at the Naval Oceanographic Office. These are the global version of the Navy Coastal Ocean Model ( NCOM) and the global Hybrid Coordinate Ocean Model(HYCOM). The NCOM model at 1/8th degree resolution is a U.S. Navy operational model, and the HYCOM at 1/12th degree resolution is currently being run in real-time by the Naval Research Laboratory in preparation for transition to the Naval Oceanographic Office for operational testing. The relative merit of using these global GODAE products as boundary and initial conditions for regional and coastal models of the California Current System and sub-domains is addressed. The system presently includes a regional model( Navy Coastal Ocean Model-NCOM) run at 9km and 4km resolution that receives boundary information from the operational global NCOM or HYCOM and, in turn, provides boundary values to high resolution NCOM sub-nests for the Monterey Bay.
