Overview of assessment methodology developped for open ocean forecasting system

In the framework of the EU project MERSEA, and GODAE, the assessment methodology has been enhanced this last two years: dedicated first to evaluate oceanic capabilities in the North Atlantic ocean and European Seas, the « metrics » have been extended to the global ocean, but also new state variables like the sea-ice. Comparisons to observations allow to infer in real-time the accuracy and performance of ocean forecasting system. The diagnostics can also be used for intercomparing different systems. Feedbacks from nested regional systems can now be taken into account as « external metrics ».
