(1) Nansen Environmental and Remote Sensing Center (NERSC), Bergen, Norway Main authors appear in bold The aim of the experiment is to explore the differences in primary production, spacial variability, timing, location and strength of the spring bloom resulting from horizontal grid resolution. The focus area is the west coast of Norway, from 60N to 70N. The HYbrid Coordinate Ocean Model is coupled with the NORWegian ECOlogical Model System and set up in a three model grid nested system, where the horizontal resolution in the focus area are 50km, 16km and 4.5km (MODL, MODM and MODS). It is found that the differences in net and gross total annual primary production is roughly 20% between MODS and MODL, where the MODS has the highest primary production. Annual net production for MODS, MODM and MODL is 94gC/m2, 85gC/m2 and 72gC/m2, respectively. This is an average over the whole area and does not differentiate between coastal areas and open ocean areas. The peak of the spring bloom in MODL is higher than in MODM and MODL, but the bloom decays faster. In MODM and MODS the tail of the bloom stays at higher concentrations for a much longer time. The most striking difference was that the composition of phytoplankton was quite different in the three model grids. Results from the model runs will be presented. Poster presentation |
